Can you see those yellow-brownish deposits between the gum and the teeth? That is tartar.
Do your teeth have brown spots? Do you notice that your teeth are no longer white? These are microba deposits, which are a combination of food, pigmentsand hardened saliva. They cannot be removed with your usual toothbrush. Unfortunately these deposits cause gum disease. This is great environment for bacteria. We recommend that our patients take oral hygiene treatment at least twice a year, which can be part of their regular dental checkup.
First the tartar above and below the gum is removed with the help of the ultrasonic tool. This process is an uncomfortable experience only for those patients whose teeth are sensitive. For them this treatment is best to be done with the use of local anaesthetic. After that, discolourations and microba deposits are removedwith a so-called Prophylex equipment.
First our dental hygienist will remove the tartar and plaque from the dental surface with an ultrasonic appliance.. The device causes no damage to enamel, the treatment is not painful. The enamel will regain its original healthy colour and smoothness.
Duration of treatment: 15-45 min. (depending on the amount of tartar)
This special appliance removes bacteria and discoloration from the dental surface with water and mineral salt. The discoloration can be caused by coffee, black tea, cigarette or by colour additives in food. The small grains only remove bacteria from the enamel, it causes no damage to the surface of the tooth. The biggest advantage of the treatment is that it makes the tooth surface so smooth that bacteria cannot reappear for weeks. The Prophyflex sandblasting appliance helps to retrieve the original colour of teeth, moreover it can make your smile whiter. Duration of treatment: 5-20 min.
Polishing may be carried out by utilising polishing paste or small-headed polishing brush.. You can ask for special pastes such as fluoride-free, menthol-free or paste that reduces sensitivity. Duration of treatment: 10-15 min.
Our dental hygienist will give you advice regarding your oral hygiene. You will examine how efficient your cleaning habits are and whether you use the appropriate appliances to clean your teeth. If necessary our colleague can offer you new appliances. Do you use the appropriate toothpaste for your teeth? Do you need to use dental floss or interdental brush? You will get answer to questions like these from our dental hygienist.
Duration of treatment: 5-10 min.
In order to maintain the result of whitening you should take the following pieces of advice in the next 48 hours:
Choose the right tooth paste, for not letting dental tartaremerge in the first place. Anti-calculus-substances in tooth pastes like pyrophosphate, phosphonates or zinccitrate can at least decrease the regeneration of dental calculus on plane spots, possibly also on other spots where the saliva gets. Its effect, however, is not definitely proved.
You also can decrease the generation of plaque with mouth wash dilutions. This way the agent chlorhexidinedigluconate kills a lot of surplus germs in the oral cavity. Regular tooth brushing (mechanic plaque conroll), however, is not replaced by suchrinses!. For the dilutions must not be used constantly , inter alia, because the microbes slowly get resistant against the substances. Furthermore, the teeth, restorations or even the tongue can colour brownish. Higher dosed agents (0,1 to 0,2 percent) possibly lead in the long run to a changed taste sensation. More recommendable are mouth washes with lower concentration (0,06 percent). For most patients it is sufficient tohave semi-yearly professional cleaning at the dental officeThis prevents decay, gum diseases, and periodontal diseases.
