Treatment is performed, depending on the infection of tooth, at one or more occasion under local anaesthesia. Root canal treatment is in most cases carried out by the use of a specific rubber dam isolating set. The tool consisting of rubber sheet and fixing clamp is a practical aid of successful root canal treatment. It provides complete overview, maximal security and sufficiently sterile conditions for treatment.

Root canal treatment means removal of the dental nerve from the dental cavity. After cleaning and shaping all accessible areas of the pulp chamber and root canals, a special filling is made into the lumen of the root canals. In case the tooth was infected, disinfecting substance (calcium-hydrochloride) is injected in canals temporarily. In such case, treatment may be carried on approximately a week later and tooth may be endowed with root filling (using gutta-percha point and sealer. Cleaning, shaping and precise filling of canals is a time consuming process. Normally, one hour is required foreach meeting.

In what cases do you need root canal treatment?

  1. In case of infection or inflammation irritation or necrosis of dental pulp.
  2. If the dental pulp opens during the preparation of the tooth for crown, inlay or filling.
  3. in case of severe periodontal disease and infectionin case of restoration and correction of misaligned teeth by prosthetic work

Why root canal treatment needs to be carried out?

As a result of the anatomical position bacteria and necrotic tissue inside the tooth cannot be cleared by the immune system or by taking antibiotics. If the tooth cavity is not cleaned, the inflammationcan reappear again and again, and spread to surrounding tissues.

The process of root canal treatment:

The first step is to make a periapical X-ray in order to see the problem. The treatment is then carried out in local anaesthesia. The dentist prepares a small opening to the center of the tooth . When the pulp chamber becomes visible the endodontist will look for the root canals. Teeth have 1, 2, 3 or rarely 4 canals. The canals are disinfected with antiseptic and antibacterial solutions. Then they are shaped with tiny flexible instruments then the canals will be filled and sealed. A temporary filling is prepared that contains Ca(OH)2 (calcium-hydrochloride) paste. The medicine can remain in the tooth for 1-4 weeks during which the dentist can change the filling once or twice. When the endodontist finds the canals clean the patient receives the permanent filling and a check up X-ray is taken.
